CNN —Hisham Awartani, one of the three Palestinian college students who were shot while walking in Vermont over Thanksgiving weekend, is paralyzed from the chest down after a bullet became lodged in his spine, his mother said. Elizabeth Price told CNN on Tuesday her son had an “incomplete spinal injury,” meaning he can feel his legs but can’t move them. Awartani, Abdalhamid and Ahmad have been friends since grade school, Price told CNN on Monday from Ramallah. Abdalhamid told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Friday he was shot in the back while running away moments after the other two students were shot. “This absolutely was a hateful act,” Murad told CNN Monday.

Crimes based on gender identity accounted for 4% of hate crimes, 1.5% were based on disability and less than 1% on gender. (AP) — Vigils for three college students of Palestinian descent who were shot in Vermont over the weekend prompted calls for authorities to recognize the violence as a hate crime, and for unity among the Jewish and Arab communities. One vigil was held Monday night at Brown University in Rhode Island, where one of the victims, Hisham Awartani, is a student. Eaton moved to Burlington over the summer from Syracuse, New York, and legally purchased the gun used in the shooting, Murad told reporters. Eaton came to the door holding his hands, palms up, and told the officers he’d been waiting for them. Sarah George, state’s attorney, said that law enforcement officials do not yet have evidence to support a hate crime charge, which under Vermont law must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The families of the men identified them in a statement as Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ahmed. Mr. Awartani studies at Brown University, Mr. Abdalhamid at Haverford College in Pennsylvania and Mr. Ahmed at Trinity College in Connecticut. CNN —A suspect has been arrested in the shooting of three Palestinian college students in Burlington, Vermont, in a case that has garnered national attention amid concerns about rising levels of hate crimes since the Israel-Hamas war erupted. Jason J. Eaton, 48, was arrested Sunday afternoon near the scene of the attack, the Burlington Police Department said in a news release. A Vermont armed robbery suspect who police say eluded capture in the past week in a vehicle, on a stolen bike, on foot and in a stolen sailboat was arrested Thursday after he was spotted in a kayak on a river, authorities said. When officers roused him, he fled at a high rate of speed, assaulting both officers with the vehicle, police said. That evening, he fled police on foot and then on a stolen bicycle before stealing a sailboat on Lake Champlain, police said. But after the sailboat rain aground at the base of lakeside cliffs, he fled, authorities said. An email was sent to police seeking to find out if Edson is being represented by an attorney.
